Shinty
camanachd
the sport of the curved stick
The game of shinty goes back to the roots of Gaelic Scotland and the
even earlier heritage of the Celtic race and is claimed to be Scotland's
oldest sport. Some say the sport was introduced to Scotland by the Irish,
alongside the country's introduction to Christianity.
Today, Shinty is best known in certain areas of the Highlands and Islands,
notably Oban, Kingussie, Newtonmore and Skye.
The game is overseen by the Camanachd Association - Comunn na Camanachd
- www.shinty.com. The
association also has a website dedicated to the youth end of the game
at www.shintyyoz.com.
In the area of East Kilbride and Glasgow, shinty clubs or teams exist
at Glasgow
Mid Argyll (playing at Pirie Park, Govan in National League Division
1), Glasgow Gaelic School (Bunsgoil Ghaidhlig Ghlaschu) Glasgow
University, Gryffe
(Linwood), Milngavie
and Bearsden, Strathclyde Police, The
Highlanders.
In East Kilbride it is understood that Mount
Cameron Primary School has its own Shinty Club.
The Glasgow
Shinty Initiative is designed to introduce children to the sport of
Shinty.
